First Time at Adana – Day 1

We spent the last week of the year in Turkey. Apart from Istanbul, we visited Barış’s family in his hometown Adana. Although the city I was born in is very close to Adana, I had never been there before. Adana is famous for spicy and hot food and good kebab. I was expecting to eat a lot in the two days in Adana, and the eating adventure started with the huge breakfast table that Barış’s mom prepared for us when we arrived in the morning.

After the breakfast we went out to explore the city. There is a huge artificial lake in Adana which looks like a sea. There were a lot of cafes and food trucks on the road around that lake. We found a nice place with a great view to have some tea.

In the afternoon we took off by car to see some nice places near Adana and eventually visited Ceyhan, which is a small town where Barış and his family lived for many years. On the way we stopped near Yılankale (The Castle of the Snakes) to check out the view, which is located between the Ceyhan River and Misis (where some of the Skyfall movie scenes were shot). The castle was on top of a mountain, so we skipped climbing there this time. Yet even from where we stopped, the view was incredibly nice. The castle’s name came from the belief that there were many snakes in that region when the castle was built by the Byzantines.

When we arrived in Ceyhan we visited the street where Barış and his family were living, saw some family friends and checked out some shops where they used to buy daily food from. There is a special drink that belongs to this region called ‘şalgam’. It is made from carrot pickles and turnip. It is very sour, salty and hot, but very tasty too. We bought some şalgam from the most famous şalgam shop in Ceyhan.

It was then time for a kebab dinner when we got back to Adana. I ate the most delicious kebab at Gönül restaurant that I have ever eaten in my life! Barış made so much fun of me because I ate a ridiculous amount and got a stomach ache afterwards.

Our first day in Adana was great and full of eating as expected. In the evening we checked out old photo albums of the family. It was so much fun to see pictures from Barış’s childhood; he looked as funny and smart as he is today.
