The best possible plan for a day trip from Milan is renting a car and driving to Portofino! On Saturday, after three hours of driving we reached Rapallo. The roads became narrower and the climate changed to a perfect one. We followed the streets and drove through Santa Margherita on curvy roads by the seaside, then arrived in Portofino.
Finding somewhere to park was a big problem. We finally found a garage and paid a fortune for the parking spot, then started to look for a nice place to swim. The center of Portofino is so cute. The city was founded by Romans and at the time it was called ‘Portus Delphini’ due to the dolphins swimming on the shore. Today it is not a fisherman’s village anymore; instead, it is a popular town among rich people who have very expensive houses on the hills of Portofino.
The center is full of restaurants and shops, but is not appropriate for swimming because of the harbour. We walked through the way we came by car and found small and nice beaches down from the road.
Paraggi beach seemed perfect for us. When we got there, we realized that most of the sunbeds belonged to the restaurants where you had to pay 30 euros each. That was a stupid number since we just wanted to swim a little and rest, not spend the whole day there. Among this sunbed jungle that was rented out by smart(!) business owners, we found a tiny part of the beach that was open for the public. It was really tiny and almost completely full with the towels of people set out on the sand. We could only squeeze two towels out and three of us could hardly sit on them. We didn’t mind, because the sea looked so beautiful and mesmerizing.
We kept altering between swimming and sunbathing until the late afternoon. Then we packed up our stuff and walked back to the center of Portofino. Everything was so beautiful! We sat at a table of the garden of a restaurant and ordered pizza. It was extremely delicious!
We were so tired on the way back. We felt that driving all the way back, filling up the gas of the car and returning it took ages. We arrived home in the late evening, but this day trip was totally worth it!
