The whole story began when I saw a big sale on camping equipment in one of the sports shops in the city. Buying a tent and two sleeping bags for this price seemed like the most reasonable thing in the world at that moment. I convinced Barış that we really needed to buy them (besides, a few friends were convinced).
When we ended up with all those this we realized that we needed an occasion to try them before they were buried in storage forever. Vättlefjäll seemed like a good option to combine a good activity like canoeing and afterwards camping. We were six people, so three canoes were enough to fit in. After we hired the canoes, we placed our big camping bags inside and dragged them to the first lake we were supposed to start with.
This region consists of a few beautiful lakes in a big forest. They are some meters away from each other, which makes it possible to take out the canoes at the end of a lake and drag them on the path in the forest until the next lake. We kept doing that, passed a few lakes, had short and long breaks in the middle of the lakes while enjoying the beers and snacks we brought for exactly those moments.
There was absolute silence in the area. It was so magical to stop for a while and listen to the nature under the beautiful afternoon sun. Passing through the narrow canals in the lakes were the most magical moments of our journey.
After a few hours of playing around we started to look for an appropriate place for camping. At a nice spot we noticed, we took the canoes on the land and turned them upside down to avoid any disaster in case of rains. Before tiredness took over, we set up the tents for our new homes. None of us were an expert on setting up a tent, in fact none of us had done it before, but thanks to the instructions inside the bags we managed.
It was time to set up a fire after we felt secure enough with the tents. Until it got dark we cooked some simple food on our campfire and finished eating. We went to bed early, since we were very tired and we didn’t know what to do in nature anymore aside from chatting and telling stories for a while.
I have never stayed in a tent before in my life. It took a while for me to sleep. It was dark, uncomfortable and scary at night. In the morning I understood that I was not the only one who found it uncomfortable. Barış was the only one who slept like a baby, and Gökhan was the only one who couldn’t sleep at all.
We thought it was already noon when we woke up, but it was only 7 o’clock! That must be the nice part of sleeping in nature. Also, we made a mistake and could not foresee where the sunlight would reach in the forest. Every part of the forest was shining under sunlight except our camping area!
We packed up our stuff, ate some small sandwiches that we saved for breakfast and kept moving with the canoes. We were all extremely tired and sore. After a few hours of struggling with the strong wind, we finally arrived at our destination.
The only thing we cared about at the end of the adventure was going home and taking a shower! We were all proud and happy that we did this, but one day of camping was more than enough.
