We kept our last day in London for two museums, a theatre show and a visit to Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace was really huge. It has 775 rooms, with 188 of them for housemaids and 19 of them are open for visitors. We didn’t enter the palace or witness the changing of the guards. We just took some pictures and walked to St. James Park for a coffee break at Inn The Park which we discovered on our first day.
The hotel we were staying in London was very near to Hyde Park. We took a nice walk in the park after breakfast on the third day of our vacation. On the map it looks like one big park, but it actually consists of two parts, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.
On our second day in London, the plan was to take a walk along the Thames and see Tower Bridge first. We started our tour by getting off of the tube at ‘Monument’ station at ‘The City’, which is the financial region of London. The Monument of the Great Fire was built between 1671-1677 to represent the big fire of 1666, which started at a bakery and took 3 days to be put out. It was surrounded by tall buildings, so I didn’t feel like climbing up the statue for a nice view, but it is possible to do that up 311 steps.
We were very excited for our London trip. As soon as we were settled in our hotel, we went out to discover the city. When we get off the tube at Westminster, the famous Big Ben was just in front of us. Most people think that ‘Big Ben’ is the name of the tower, but I have learned that it is actually the name of the big bell in the tower. The tower was named the ‘Elisabeth Tower’ in 2012, which was built in 1856 and is a part of the parliament building.
We managed to apply for a UK visa this summer and got our 2-year visas last week. We have packed and are leaving for London today.
